Conservation of Saimaa Ringed Seal

Overview

The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the rarest seal species in the world and it is currently endangered. With 420 individuals left of this species, action is required to ensure that this subspecies will remain safe. The following project focuses on taking local actions in order to ensure the survival of the Saimaa ringed seal. This page includes some of the actions that can be taken as well as information in regards to relevant organizations working to keep this species protected.

Actions

  • Construction of snowbanks for the seals mating season. During the winter season the seals hide themselves to breed further. Once the species have bred, they will use snowbanks during the period of March-May to protect their pups from potential threats. Due to the effects of climate change, a decrease in the rate of snow present every winter has been seen. In recent years volunteers have participated to build snowbanks for the seals to be able to protect their pups.
  • Eliminating potential traps from local fishing. Certain types of nylon fishing traps have been known to endanger the seals as they can get trapped inside of them. Volunteers are dispatched in order to remove this traps and potential threats from the seals
  • Awareness and education. Another valuable action is to educate yourself in the issue and help educate the community on the potential threats presented to these seals. This will help you come up with your own innovative ideas on how to help protect the endangered seals!
